General ThoughtsSaber Capital Management

Quick Update, Recollection of Goals, and Reminder

To those who follow my blog, thanks for reading. I’ve enjoyed writing ideas down, and the feedback/comments/email correspondence/advice, etc… has been outstanding. I don’t spend a lot of time talking about my business, because I prefer that the blog remains a free source of information and ideas on for individual investors.┬áLots of good things have happened so far at Saber Capital Management, which is the company I formed to manage outside capital, and that remains my top business priority.

But with that said, I will continue to post ideas and commentary periodically on this blog as it’s been beneficial to my investing and a lot of fun. I’ve made a lot of connections already with other excellent investors, and also some prospective clients/partners, but the latter is an unintended side benefit for me.

The original objectives for the blog remain intact:

  1. Improve my skill by writing down ideas (writing is an excellent way to clarify thoughts)
  2. Network and connect with other like minded investors to learn from them and share ideas
  3. Help individual investors improve their own investing through reviewing basic value investing principles

With these three goals in mind, I will continue to write about investment theory, share links to other valuable information, and write about specific investment ideas that I find interesting.

With that recollection complete, on to the original purpose of this post…. and tha was to remind my readers about Google Reader’s last day (this Sunday, 6/30/13).

If you’re like me, you’ve probably gotten numerous reminders from other blogs, as well as reader itself, so this will be redundant, but I’ve noticed when checking my blog stats that many people are still reading through Google Reader.

Check out a few of the alternatives including The Old Reader or Feedly to name a couple. There are numerous others I’m sure.

Also, many of you have subscribed to my posts via email, which is a good way to stay updated on what’s going on here at BHI. If you are reading this somewhere other than my blog, feel free to come to the blog and enter you email address in the space on the right sidebar and you’ll receive my posts via email. You’ll get no more than 1 email per day, and you’ll only receive an email if I post something here.

Traveling Next Couple Weeks

I will be traveling to a few different places over the next few weeks, some business, some family time, but I will be busy and so posting will be light over the next 2 weeks or so.

Have a great weekend!

  1. I’m not sure if you’ve seen this, but take a look at this interesting article on survivor-ship bias:
    http://youarenotsosmart.com/2013/05/23/survivorship-bias/

I particularly enjoyed the part about the analysis of the WW2 bombers that came back and how the military leaders instinctively took the wrong approach for reinforcing the planes. It was the counter intuitive quick thinking of the mathematician that saved the day.

Anyway, it made me think of survivor-ship bias in relation to investing. Sometimes it’s important to learn what not to do from the theses that don’t work out as planned. It would be interesting to read a post about some thesis you had, that ended up not working out and some learnings from that.

    1. Thanks Michael… I’ll check this out.

And yes, that’s a good idea for a future post or series of posts. I keep an investment log from all my past investments including the basic thesis for each one, so this type of post analysis would be good.
